Hannes Kok
Hannes is a PlanAdapt Fellow, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
He is a project development specialist with several years of experience in the development of climate change adaptation projects, primarily for submission to multi-lateral funding bodies such as the Global Environment Facility, Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund. He has worked across numerous focal areas and sectors, including agriculture, urban climate resilience, EbA, WASH and sustainable natural resource management. Examples of projects he has worked on include inter alia Transformational Adaptation for Climate Resilience in Lake Chilwa Basin of Malawi (TRANSFORM), Resilience to hurricanes in the building sector in Antigua and Barbuda and Jordan Integrated Landscapes Management Initiative. Prior to working in the climate space, Hannes was involved in the education sector, having worked as a teacher and outdoor education instructor.
He is passionate about geography and socio-economic development and has a keen interest in the geopolitical dimensions of climate change, particularly climate migration and mobility. Through his experience working in countries outside of South Africa, he has developed a broad perspective on international development, action on climate change and environmental sustainability. Drawing on this experience, he is committed to developing projects that not only satisfy client requirements but also deliver tangible results on the ground that ultimately positively affect climate-vulnerable communities.
Hannes has an academic background that covers both the social and natural sciences. He holds a BA in Social Dynamics from Stellenbosch University, a BSc Honours in Geography from the University of South Africa, and an MSc in Environmental Management from SOAS, University of London.
