Alice Altmayer
Alice is an Intern (Research, Collaboration & Innovation – Climate Risk Management, Climate Adaptation) at PlanAdapt. Originally from Paris, she has been living in London since 2020.
Alice is passionate about connecting climate change adaptation with disaster risk reduction, and she is particularly interested in understanding how local social dynamics can shape more effective and inclusive adaptation practices. Her master dissertation, “Exploring the Influence of Social Capital on Volunteer Participation in the UK: A Study of Community First Responders,” examines how strong community ties can enhance volunteer networks, improve responses to emergencies, and ultimately reduce disaster risks.
Before joining PlanAdapt, Alice interned at EcoDecision, a French consultancy contributing to climate adaptation efforts. She particularly worked on protecting marine biodiversity in the south of France. Her role involved developing strategies to mitigate the impacts of small boat anchoring on Posidonia seagrass meadows, which are vital to marine biodiversity and carbon sequestration. She collaborated closely with local stakeholders to promote sustainable boating practices to protect these ecosystems. Additionally, she worked on designing sustainable water management plans to adapt the water use of several communities and institutions to climate change.
Apart from her work at EcoDecision, Alice contributed to several initiatives focused on climate adaptation and policy development. At Generation Maastricht, she worked alongside young leaders to analyse the effectiveness of new climate adaptation policy solutions. She was also involved with the King’s College Policy Center, where she focused on researching and advocating for robust climate adaptation policies that emphasise social and environmental justice.
Alice is completing her MSc in Risk, Disaster, and Resilience at University College London. She also holds a BA in Liberal Arts from King’s College London, where she majored in Geography and minored in Politics. Her interdisciplinary academic journey has deepened her interest in the political dimensions of climate change and given her a strong understanding of how social factors and governance shape effective adaptation strategies.
At PlanAdapt, Alice is eager to expand her knowledge and gain hands-on experience in developing socially inclusive adaptation strategies.
