Petter Sundqvist

Petter is a PlanAdapt Fellow, based in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Petter has 6 years of experience in research and project implementation in developing countries, mainly acquired in Sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe. As a researcher, he has worked on projects covering climate change vulnerability; armed conflicts and environmental risks; urbanization and maternal health; land governance; and early childhood development. This research has been produced for a range of audiences including local policy-makers, humanitarian actors, academics and international institutions.

Petter is passionate about understanding the complex interactions between human and natural systems and in particular the social dimensions of climate risks, impacts and resilience. He has previously worked on the integration of climate risks in humanitarian and social protection systems, developing information products and tools to guide decision-makers at different levels. He has worked extensively with both government and civil society actors. In Malawi, for instance, Petter had a dual secondment to the local and central government while working for a GIZ-led social protection program, in which he supported the integration of the country’s national social registry, promoting its role as a central component of a more adaptive social protection system.

With an educational background in Economics and Human Geography, Petter is specialized in quantitative and geospatial research. As a researcher, he has used diverse approaches to answering research questions including complex household surveys, field experiments, semi-structured interviews, remote sensing and GIS. He also has sound experience in the design of data collection tools, having led primary data collection activities in several countries such as Ukraine, Malawi, Uganda and Tanzania.
